PRATT COMMUNITY SCHOOL TO REMAIN OPEN!
Posted 2009-10-08 · Nearly A Year Ago
As you no doubt have learned, on Tuesday night the MPS Board voted 7–0 to reject the recommendation of its staff to close Pratt Community School. This was accomplished through very substantial and ethical advocacy by the broad Pratt community, with a critical role played by Somali leadership and strong support from social service agencies including East Side Neighborhood Services and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. The Board again was persuaded by the level of community integration and support, Pratt’s continuing academic success, the community’s desire for a school of genuine ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, and our willingness to work at it.
This moment of unanimous Board support is our window of opportunity not just to make Pratt stronger, but to even more effectively and broadly weave Pratt within a network of community institutions that operates to support our at-risk and immigrant families and strengthen our civic bonds. With good fortune, we will bring forward our energy and creativity for an effort that can serve this part of town for some time to come.
Thank you to everyone who has played a role in sustaining us to this point. Stay tuned!

Influenza-like Illness Symptom Screening Tool
Posted 2009-09-09 · A Year Ago
Parent/ Guardian of Pratt Student/s:
Please read and follow the provided information:
Influenza-like Illness Symptom Screening Tool
for Parents and Caregivers:
Use the following questionnaire to assess the health status of your child on a daily basis.
Does your child have:
1.Fever (100◦ F or greater)? Yes No
(take temperature before giving fever reducing medicine)
2.Sore Throat? Yes No
3.Cough? Yes No
SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD HOME?
● If you checked yes to fever AND one of the other symptoms, keep your child home for at least 24 hours after his or her fever is gone without fever reducing medicine. For many children this will be 5 to 7 days. Your child should feel well enough to participate in school before returning. If you have questions about your child’s health or symptoms, call your child’s healthcare provider.
● If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease, such as strep, follow your healthcare provider’s recommendation and school policy for when to return to school.
WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY CHILD’S SCHOOL?
•If you checked “yes” for fever AND one of the other symptoms, tell your child’s attendance office that your child is home with influenza-like illness (612-668-1124).
•If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease, such as strep, tell your child’s attendance office (612-668-1124).
•No personal information about your child, including your child’s name, will be shared outside of the school.

Action Steps for Parents to Protect Your Child and
Family from the Flu this School Year
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 4 main ways you and your family may keep from getting sick with the flu at school and at home:
1.Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
2.Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder; not into your hands.
3.Stay home if you or your child is sick for at least 24 hours after there is no longer a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others. When calling the school about your child’s absence, please let them know they are out with Influenza-Like Illness (fever of 100 degrees or more with a cough or sore throat).
4.Get your family vaccinated for seasonal flu.
Follow these steps to prepare for the flu during the 2009-2010 school year:
•Make sure the school has all of your current emergency contact information for your child.
•Plan for child care at home if your child gets sick or their school is dismissed.
•Plan to monitor the health of the sick child and any other children in the household by checking for fever and other symptoms of flu every morning before sending them to school.
•Identify if you have children who are at higher risk of serious disease from the flu and talk to your health care provider about a plan to protect them during the flu season. Children at high risk of serious disease from the flu include: children under 5 years of age and those children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes.
•Identify a separate room in the house for the care of sick family members.
•Collect games, books, DVDs and other items to keep your family entertained if your child is sick and must stay home.

Update to the Timeline for Extended Work on Changing School Options
Posted 2009-06-24 · More Than A Year Ago
Many parents and community members have asked for an updated timeline for presentation of a revised Changing School Options plan, additional community engagement and final Board of Education vote. We ask for your patience with us as we work to develop and disseminate full and accurate information in a timely fashion.
Currently, members of the Minneapolis Public School’s administrative team and the board are collaborating to revise the Changing School Options recommendations that were initially presented on April 28. We are working together to further develop the best plan possible to right-size the district, given current financial realities and the goal to create a major urban school district that offers academic excellence for all students in all schools, provides stability for the future and is also financially sustainable over the long haul.
The additional work involved in the administration and board’s crafting an improved plan will require most of the summer. We are waiting to hold further community engagement sessions until we have a clear and thorough plan recommendation, likely by late summer or early fall. We collected a significant amount of input from February through April that we will use in revising the plan. We do not believe it would be fair to ask our families to engage in community sessions until we are prepared with clearly defined recommendations and rationale to share.
We are committed to completing each step in this process deliberately and carefully. We will come back to the community by holding informational town hall meetings at which we will share the revised plan and answer questions that may arise. Because the end of the school year is so near and summer is such a busy time for our families, our next round of community engagement will be scheduled to take place after the start of school in the fall. Please bear in mind that the following schedule is an estimate of the timeline for completing our Changing School Options Plan and is subject to change.
June
Administration revises plan and evaluate impact of changes
July-early August
Board and administration study revised plan and refine as needed
September
Community Town Hall Information Sessions
Public Hearing on School Change
Final Board Vote
Interested parents and community members should continue to check the MPS website, www.mpls.k12.mn.us beginning in July, to find planning materials being developed over the summer.

News from the First Grade Science Club!
Posted 2009-05-04 · More Than A Year Ago
Is the Earth a living organism? What is the effect of oil spills on oceans and it’s wildlife? What stories do rocks and fossils tell about the Earth? How does paper come from trees, and how is paper recycled? How can I help protect and care for the Earth? How can I protect and care for Pratt and Pratt’s garden? For the next two weeks, a group of first graders from Room 101 will explore just such questions!
Pratt is fortunate to be part of the GK-12 grant, which pairs science graduate students from the University of Minnesota with a handful of elementary school classrooms. Room 101 is one of those classrooms. The big idea behind GK-12 is that collaboration between classroom teacher and graduate student can strengthen and enhance science learning for all students.
Since September, graduate student Alma DeAnda has been working with Lori Thompson, Jane Greene and Room 101’s first graders — presenting, teaching lessons and guiding activities in everything from the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly to the study of magnetism. This collaboration culminates in the after school Science Club — one more way to offer enrichment to first grade scientists!

Breakfast Schedule Change
Posted 2008-11-04 · Nearly 2 Years Ago
The breakfast schedule has changed! Beginning next week, students eating breakfast will go immediately to the lunchroom for breakfast. Students who choose not to eat breakfast may go directly to their lockers and to the classroom. Each teacher will be in the classroom to greet the students.
Why the change? As educators committed to academic excellence, we are always assessing our processes to look at ways we can use our time more efficiently in order to provide the academic rigor our students need to achieve at higher levels.
This week, teachers will be talking to students about the change and the process we will use each day for breakfast. We are asking for your support by emphasizing this change to your child throughout the week.
Children will now enter Door #2 on the west side of the building and either go directly to the lunchroom or to their classroom.
We thank you for your continued support of Pratt Community School.
Should you have any questions, please call 612-668-1122.
